About the Author JC Knowles
J.C. Knowles was born in Wallace, Duplin County on 28 June 1928. Following his father’s death in 1929, J.C. and his twin sister was admitted to Oxford Orphanage where they spent 13 years (1930 – 1943). J.C. left school and joined the U.S. Merchant Marines where he served for three years. From 1949 – 1951 J. C. served in the U.S. Army.
Following his military service he served as Executive Director of the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians for 13 years, Raleigh & Wake County Board Education for 15 years, North Carolina Historical Commission for 6 years, and Andrew Johnson Commission for 10 years. He also was an auctioneer for 42 years.
In 1954 he married Dollie Smith of Ingold, Sampson County on national television. The Knowles’ have two children and three grandchildren.
Many honors have come to J.C. over the years; Tar Heel of the Week (News & Observer), N.C. Order of the Long Leaf Pine, Book of Golden Deeds by the Exchange Club, 2013 Kiwanian Of the Year, 2007 and 2014 Apex Citizen of the Year, and many others. Currently he served as the officfial Ambassador for the Town of Apex.
J.C. is an author, publisher and North Carolina historian. He has been a member of the Sampson County Historical Society for several years.
