Formation of a Sampson County Historical Society became a reality on Tues. night, Feb 20, 1979 when 21 persons met at the Dr. Small House in Clinton and voted to go ahead with the project.

The formation of the Society, long talked about in Sampson County, grew out of a class in Sampson History taught by Claude Moore, Professor of History at Mt. Olive College. He was also considered the Sampson County Historian at that time.

This organization was to preserve the history of Sampson County. Sampson County had an impressive heritage and many of the early events were becoming increasingly obscured by the mist of time. Documenting and preserving the details of Sampson’s history so that they may be available to future generations.

At the second organizational meeting on March 13, 1979, forty seven members attended. Elected to office were President, Oscar M. Bizzell, First Vice President, Charles H. (Jack) Dubose Sr., Second Vice President, Harold Cook, Secretary, Mrs. Norma Moore and Treasurer Billy R. Peterson.

The first regular meeting of the society held April 14, 1979, ten Committees were formed to carryout this documenting and preservation. Each of the committees had a Chairman and they had members working with them. They began with the preparation of a Heritage Book of Sampson County to be available for the Bicentennial Celebration of Sampson County in 1984. The Heritage of Sampson County 1784–1984 was published and available for sale in 1984. It was very successful. Today, it is still in demand.

The Sampson County Historical Society and its Newsletter are still here in April 2015 and now taking on a new adventure with a web site to reach out to the descendants of Sampson County and our adjoining counties.
